FANCL adopts Eastman’s Tritan for refillable skincare packaging to cut plastic waste

This system is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste while maintaining product integrity.

JAPAN – Japanese skincare brand FANCL has adopted Eastman’s Tritan™ copolyester in the packaging design for its new toiro skincare line.

The material has been used to create a reusable primary bottle and refillable cartridges, marking a shift toward more sustainable packaging in personal care.

With the toiro range, consumers only need to purchase the Tritan bottle and cap once. After that, they can refill it with preservative-free skincare via cartridges designed for easy replenishment.

This system is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste while maintaining product integrity.

Eastman’s Tritan copolyester is known for its durability, shatter resistance, and chemical stability, making it ideal for repeated use in beauty products.

According to the company, the material also protects the potency of active ingredients, ensuring product performance over time.

“FANCL needed a material that could check a lot of boxes for this new line,” said Tara Cary, market manager for Cosmetic Packaging at Eastman.

“From durability and chemical resistance to aesthetics, Tritan addressed all those challenges. We love working with brands like FANCL that are committed to making sustainable products without compromise.”

The reusable cap is another key feature, designed to further minimize waste by replacing disposable closures.

Eastman says that incorporating long-lasting components into cosmetic packaging helps prevent plastic from ending up in landfills – a message that resonates strongly with today’s environmentally conscious consumers.

The toiro bottle is also positioned as a premium product, appealing especially to younger consumers who value sustainability and are looking for eco-friendly solutions that don’t sacrifice style or quality.

Eastman’s Tritan copolyester is gaining traction in other sectors too. It has also been used by Berry Global and Aquafigure in a reusable water bottle range targeting younger demographics.

Each container is 330ml in size and made from BPA-free Tritan, described as a widely recyclable, food-approved co-polyester from Eastman that can, apparently, endure ‘hundreds’ of dishwasher cycles.

Its cap is made from mono-material polypropylene and is designed to provide a tight seal while remaining easy for children to open.

That project features customizable 3D artwork cards and aims to promote hydration habits among youth through personalization and reusability.

By partnering with FANCL, Eastman reinforces the potential of high-performance, sustainable materials to support both environmental goals and consumer expectations in the beauty and personal care industry.
