These ingredients address the growing consumer demand for biodegradable, ethically sourced, high-performing beauty products.
NETHERLANDS – BASF, a German chemical company, has introduces three biodegradable hair care agents at In-cosmetics Global 2025 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The new launches include Verdessence Maize, a natural styling polymer; Lamesoft OP Plus, a wax-based opacifier dispersion; and Dehyton PK45 GA/RA, a betaine surfactant derived from Rainforest Alliance Certified coconut oil.
The three ingredients are either biodegradable, sourced from renewable resources, or certified as sustainable.
These ingredients aim to meet the growing consumer demand for biodegradable, ethically sourced, and high-performing beauty products, while addressing key formulation challenges such as cold processing requirements and compatibility with sulfate-alternative surfactant systems.
Dr Boris Gaspar, Head of Market Development Personal Care EMEA, stated, “As society and future generations are expected to live longer, consumers feel an urge to actively impact their footprint and preserve the earth as the foundation for long and healthy living.”
“We support our customers by providing biodegradable alternatives to traditional ingredients, considering the consumer desire for responsible beauty routines.”
Verdessence Maize is an alternative to PVP and VP/VA polymers, ideal for natural and organic cosmetics.
Derived from renewable feedstocks, it performs comparably or better than synthetic polymers in applications such as crystal-clear pump sprays and mousses, offering superior curl retention and bending stiffness.
Lamesoft OP Plus provides a sustainable alternative to synthetic, acrylate-based ingredients.
It offers an excellent opacifying power, care benefits in rinse-off applications, and compatibility with sulfate-free surfactant systems, while improving combing ease and reducing hair breakage.
According to the company, Dehyton PK45 GA/RA is an amphoteric surfactant perfect for shampoos, bath products, and skin cleansers. It offers excellent foaming properties and supports responsible sourcing practices that promote better farmer livelihoods and environmental protection.
In addition to the product launches, BASF’s Personal Care business unit received three Innovation Prizes from the German consulting agency BSB during the event. Oximony, Lamesoft OP Plus, and Verdessence Maize each earned second place in their respective award categories.
BASF was also recognized as the most popular supplier ranked by product searches on SpecialChem.
