Boots launches dermatology training program for pharmacists to enhance in-store skincare expertise

With this initiative, Boots is reinforcing its commitment to providing accessible, expert-led skincare solutions.

UK – Boots, the UK’s leading health and beauty retailer, has unveiled an initiative aimed at enhancing dermatological expertise among its pharmacists, in partnership with L’Oréal Groupe and renowned consultant dermatologist Dr. Justine Hextall.

According to the company, the training has been approved by the British Association of Dermatologists.

The training is set to cover a wide range of dermatological concerns, including acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation.

In addition, the pharmacists will gain insights into melanoma detection, skin structure, microbiome health, and scalp conditions, ensuring they can provide informed guidance to customers seeking skincare advice.

Dr Justine Hextall, Consultant Dermatologist, stated, “The training I developed for Boots in collaboration with L’Oréal Dermatological Beauty gives pharmacists the ability to advise on and treat the most common skin conditions.”

“We know that the number of people suffering from common skin conditions is rising and, for those affected, it can have a huge impact – from uncomfortable, itchy skin to loss of confidence.”

This initiative comes at a time when demand for accessible dermatological support is on the rise.

Approximately 60% of the UK population has experienced a skin condition at some point in their lives, with skin-related issues accounting for one in four new consultations in England and Wales, according to research published by No7.

Boots aims to alleviate pressure on general practitioners while making expert skincare advice readily available to the public.

Boots has also introduced the AI-powered SmartSkin Checker, a revolutionary tool available through its Online Doctor service to complement this training.

According to Boots, this digital platform allows users to upload photos of their skin concerns, leveraging artificial intelligence to screen for over 70 potential conditions.

The tool provides up to five possible diagnoses, including acne, eczema, rosacea, impetigo, and fungal infections, with a 95% likelihood that one of the suggested conditions is accurate.

However, the SmartSkin Checker does not replace professional medical advice but it serves as an accessible first step for individuals seeking clarity on their skin health.
