Elopak launches circular cartons to align with EU PPWR mandates

Each D-Pak carton is crafted from responsibly sourced paperboard, coated with thin layers of protective polymers.

EUROPE – Elopak, in partnership with Orkla Home and Personal Care (OHPC) and Dow, has unveiled a new line of D-Pak cartons featuring a blend of recycled (circular) polyethylene (PE) and bio-circular (renewable) polymers.

The launch aims to help brands meet the requirements of the European Union’s upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which will mandate the inclusion of recycled content in packaging by 2030.

“Across all our brands, we’ve seen strong consumer preference for Elopak’s sustainable cartons,” said Anne Marheim Støren, Sustainability Director at OHPC.

“By introducing circular PE as a standard, we’re strengthening our ability to meet customer sustainability expectations while proactively preparing for EU regulations on recycled content.”

Each D-Pak carton is crafted from responsibly sourced paperboard, coated with thin layers of protective polymers.

Elopak notes that 10% of the plastic layer will consist of post-consumer recycled PE, while the remainder will be made from bio-circular polymers derived from vegetable-based waste, such as used cooking oil.

“We are early movers in offering this innovative mix of circular and bio-circular materials,” said Emilie Olderskog, Director of Sustainability at Elopak.

“This not only reduces plastic waste going to landfill but also contributes to our Scope 3 emissions reduction target of 25%, reinforcing Elopak’s leadership in sustainable packaging.”

Product rollout across the Nordics

The updated D-Pak cartons are now being rolled out across OHPC’s product portfolio in the Nordic region, covering well-known brands such as Klar, OMO, and Comfort.

These packaging innovations will be used for laundry detergents and fabric softeners, reinforcing the brand’s sustainability strategy.

Marian Gmenta, Marketing Lead for Circular & Renewable Solutions at Dow, added, “We are proud to continue our collaboration with Elopak and OHPC.

“At Dow, we aim to support the transition to a lower-carbon, circular economy by providing advanced circular and bio-circular polymer solutions—enabling our partners to stay ahead of regulatory goals.”
