Unicharm, Toyota Tsusho partner to boost sanitary napkin production in Kenya

With this initiative, these companies are not only addressing a pressing public health need but also laying the groundwork for a more equitable and empowered future for women in East Africa.

KENYA – Unicharm Corporation and Toyota Tsusho Corporation have teamed up to launch local production of sanitary napkins in Kenya.

This collaboration involves Toyota Tsusho’s group company, CFAO Kenya Limited, marking a significant milestone in addressing the low penetration of sanitary products in the region.

The initiative centers on the production and distribution of “SOFY Long Lasting” sanitary napkins, which began in January 2025.

This partnership builds on earlier efforts by Unicharm and CFAO Kenya, which began importing and selling the premium “SOFY Deep Absorb” sanitary napkins from their Egyptian factory in 2023.

However, challenges in balancing quality and affordability prompted the shift to local production.

According to the company, manufacturing in Kenya aims to reduce costs, improve accessibility, and create a sustainable supply chain that supports long-term market growth.

Takahisa Takahara, president & CEO of Unicharm Corporation, stated, “Together with Toyota Tsusho, Unicharm aims to realize a society where all people can live with peace of mind through the widespread use of sanitary products in the African market.”

“Through this initiative, we will establish a sustainable business model rooted in the region by combining Toyota Tsusho’s extensive network with our technological capabilities and contribute to enhancing the quality of life (QOL) of local consumers.”

The partners have established a joint venture, Sofy East Africa Limited, headquartered in Nairobi, to solidify their commitment to the partnership.

The new entity is set to integrate product development, manufacturing, sales, and marketing under one roof, with ambitions to expand into neighbouring countries.

This initiative aligns with Toyota Tsusho’s “With Africa for Africa” philosophy, which emphasizes inclusive development across the continent.

With this initiative, these companies are not only addressing a pressing public health need but also laying the groundwork for a more equitable and empowered future for women in East Africa.

Unicharm’s products are rolling out in three African countries, including Kenya, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The launch comes at a time when Kenya’s sanitary napkin market is undergoing steady growth, driven by rising awareness of menstrual hygiene, expanding urban populations, and increasing efforts to make products more affordable and accessible.

According to a report by IndexBox, as of 2024, the broader sanitary towel and diaper market in Kenya was valued at approximately $995 million, reflecting a 5.9% decline from the previous year.

However, penetration remains relatively low, with estimates suggesting that only about 30% to 50% of women and girls in Kenya have consistent access to sanitary napkins.
