Paptic’s materials are made from renewable wood fibres, making them recyclable.

FINLAND – Finnish innovator Paptic has introduced a fibre-based solution for menstrual product packaging, addressing the environmental challenges posed by traditional plastic alternatives.
According to industry insights, plastic packaging for sanitary pads contributes heavily to environmental pollution due to its low recycling rates compared to fibre-based options.
Alexandros Skouras, segment director at Paptic, emphasized the company’s commitment to balancing sustainability and functionality.
“Menstrual pad packaging demands durability, crease resistance, high production speeds, and being lightweight and recyclable,” Skouras stated.
“We invested heavily in R&D to develop materials that provide the right balance of softness, strength, and processability at an industrial scale.”
Paptic’s fully recyclable materials serve as a seamless drop-in replacement for plastic in various hygiene packaging formats, such as wicket bags and wraps.
These wood-fiber-based solutions are engineered to be soft, enhancing the unboxing experience while elevating brand perception.
“One of the challenges has been to develop a material that is environmentally sustainable yet matches the mechanical strength and runnability of traditional plastic films,” Skouras shared.
“Our approach ensures sustainability and functionality are two sides of the same coin.”
Paptic’s materials are compatible with existing high-speed packaging lines, allowing brands to adopt sustainable practices without sacrificing efficiency.
“We support our messaging with life-cycle data, certifications, and consumer insights, showing that our solutions don’t just tick compliance boxes but also help brands stand out in a competitive, sustainability-driven market,” Skouras added.
Paptic recently joined the European Disposables and Nonwovens Association to further its mission of delivering sustainable alternatives.
“For menstrual pad packaging, we combine recyclability and low carbon footprint with discreet, silent handling and a premium feel, qualities consumers value highly,” Skouras noted.
In a related development, a recent campaign in China has gained attention for upcycling sanitary product packaging into stylish handbags, challenging unsustainable habits and addressing menstrual stigma.
This initiative highlights the growing global focus on innovative recycling and consumer engagement in sustainable practices.
