BASF delivers first bio-based DMAPA to Asia Pacific for sustainable surfactant production

This delivery represents a pivotal step in advancing eco-friendly personal care solutions.

INDIA – BASF has marked a significant milestone in sustainability by delivering its first shipment of biomass-balanced 3-(dimethylamino)propylamine (DMAPA) in the Asia Pacific region to Galaxy Surfactants, a prominent manufacturer of speciality care and performance ingredients for the beauty, home care, and wellness markets.

Galaxy Surfactants will utilise BASF’s BMBCert DMAPA to produce Galaxy CAPB SB, a biodegradable amphoteric surfactant widely used in personal care formulations, such as shampoos, body washes, shower gels, and liquid soaps.

The partnership underscores Galaxy Surfactants’ dedication to reducing its carbon footprint, aligning with its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) roadmap to evolve into a future-ready, low-carbon solutions provider.

By integrating BASF’s sustainable BMBCert™ DMAPA, the company aims to achieve significant CO₂ emissions reduction compared to conventional products, demonstrating a clear commitment to more sustainable raw materials and green chemistry practices that meet the increasing demand for eco-conscious formulations in both personal and home care segments.

Avinash Nandanwar, Head of Sourcing and Sustainability at Galaxy Surfactants, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating,  “As a company committed to enabling responsible beauty and home care solutions, we are constantly evaluating ways to reduce our carbon footprint without compromising on product performance.

“This collaboration with BASF allows us to innovate with purpose and offer our customers sustainable, science-backed solutions like Galaxy CAPB SB, which meets the growing global demand for high-efficacy yet environmentally conscious formulations.”

BASF’s BMBCert™ DMAPA is produced at its certified manufacturing facilities in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Geismar, Louisiana, USA, employing renewable feedstocks and renewable electricity through a mass balance approach that replaces fossil-based raw materials with sustainably sourced biomass.

This innovative production method allows BASF to significantly lower the cradle-to-gate product carbon footprint while maintaining high product performance.

The BMBCert™ DMAPA carries ISCC PLUS and REDcert2 certifications, ensuring transparency and credibility in sustainable biomass usage.

This product is recognized for its mildness, biodegradability, and exceptional foam properties, as well as its ability to reduce static charge and build-up in hair care applications, providing consumers with enhanced sensory experiences like easier styling and flyaway reduction.

Galaxy Surfactants, with a rich history dating back to 1980 and an expansive product portfolio comprising over 210 grades, is committed to sustainable growth through innovations rooted in green chemistry.

Their “Consumer to Chemistry” approach reflects a deep understanding of consumer needs and environmental considerations, positioning the company as a preferred partner to multinational and regional FMCG brands.

BASF’s extensive production capacity of DMAPA, spanning the Asia Pacific, Europe, and North America, enhances its ability to meet the growing sustainability demands of the global personal care industry.
