Amcor partners with Cut by Fred for refillable shampoo sticks

Amcor’s Exclusive Refill Technology thus exemplifies how sustainable packaging solutions can enhance consumer usability without compromising performance.

FRANCE – Amcor has supplied its Exclusive Refill Technology to the French natural hair care brand Cut By Fred for its Detox Stick Shampoo, enhancing the refill process to be simpler, more hygienic, and environmentally friendly.

This refillable packaging innovation uses a mono-material construction made entirely from polypropylene (PP), allowing the stick and its refill to be recyclable where facilities exist.

The original 75 mL container weighs 55 grams, while each refill weighs just 18 grams, delivering substantial material savings aligned with sustainability goals and EU packaging regulations.

Marion Lhermitte of Cut By Fred says, “We want our products to be good not only for humans but especially for the planet, and that extends to our choice of packaging.”

“It is equally important that our products and packaging deliver the best consumer experience.”

This cumbersome procedure negatively impacted refill sales.

Amcor’s Exclusive stick enables a mess-free refill where the refill can be directly inserted into the original container with minimal contact, preventing product contamination and improving the consumer experience by eliminating the need to touch the shampoo during application.

The refill system’s precision parts allow easy and accurate application, supporting hygiene and convenience while reinforcing Cut By Fred’s commitment to environmentally conscious packaging.

This innovation supports a circular economy by keeping materials in circulation longer and provides a strong branding opportunity with an attractive design featuring large decoration areas on the stick and cap.

According to Cut By Fred, this packaging aligns with its mission of creating products that are good for both humans and the planet, reflecting their clean, vegan hair care philosophy with ingredients of at least 97% natural origin.

Previously, Cut By Fred’s shampoo refill process was complex and consumer-unfriendly, requiring melting the refill in a microwave, manually transferring it to the container, and solidifying it in a fridge.

Recently, Amcor collaborated with Maison Guerlain to provide its CleanStream® premium post-consumer recycled (PCR) polypropylene polymer for the packaging of Guerlain’s new Aqua Allegoria hand cream line.

This line, formulated with over 97% natural-origin ingredients, required packaging that aligns with both the brand’s luxury image and its sustainability commitment.

Amcor’s CleanStream technology uses advanced AI-driven sorting and decontamination processes to mechanically recycle household polypropylene waste into high-purity recycled plastic suitable for contact-sensitive applications like cosmetics packaging.

The hand cream bottles boast a distinctive hexagonal design inspired by the honeycomb, reflecting Guerlain’s iconic bee emblem.

Manufactured entirely from polypropylene in three colours to differentiate product variants, the multilayer construction ensures the creams’ quality and effectiveness are preserved.
