This move is set to encourage countries worldwide to prioritize sun protection within their health systems.

NETHERLANDS – BASF and Beyond Suncare have welcomed a decision by the World Health Organization (WHO) to include broad-spectrum sunscreen with high SPF in the 24th edition of the Model List of Essential Medicines (EML) and the 10th edition of the Model List of Essential Medicines for Children (EMLc).
This inclusion follows a comprehensive, evidence-based application submitted in November 2024 by the Global Albinism Alliance, in collaboration with the United Nations Independent Expert on the Enjoyment of Human Rights by Persons with Albinism, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Climate Change, and several other partners, including Beyond Suncare.
The recognition of sunscreen as an essential medicine is set to encourage countries worldwide to prioritize sun protection within their health systems, thereby enhancing access and affordability for vulnerable populations.
Mafalda Soto, Executive Director of Beyond Suncare, stated, “This landmark decision elevates the importance of sun protection for vulnerable populations. As we move forward, the collaboration between organizations, healthcare professionals, and advocates will be crucial in ensuring that everyone, especially those with albinism, can access the essential protection they deserve.”
“Together, we are not just protecting skin; we are safeguarding lives and promoting a future in which every individual can thrive under the sun.”
Beyond Suncare’s mission to safeguard lives extends beyond protecting skin, aiming to promote a future where every individual can thrive under the sun.
Dr. Ulrich Issberner, Director of Market Development Suncare at BASF, remarked that the listing of broad-spectrum sunscreens as an essential medicine reinforces the crucial role of safe and effective sun protection products.
The decision empowers sunscreen producers and UV-filter ingredient developers to advocate for their products amid evolving regulations and growing consumer scepticism.
BASF’s longstanding support for Beyond Suncare, since 2014, includes providing expertise and ingredients for tailored sunscreens for people with albinism in sub-Saharan Africa.
Their formulations address specific needs such as water resistance and suitability for sensitive skin.
BASF also donates sun care ingredients, helping to protect individuals from skin cancer while promoting dignity and health equity through accessible sun protection.
