Plinius Labs targets cosmetics market with new flax-derived bio-based ingredients

As the pilot advances, expect these ingredients to debut in premium skincare lines, reinforcing Europe’s leadership in sustainable beauty and inspiring similar waste-to-wealth models worldwide.

BELGIUM – Plinius Labs, a pioneering Belgian research firm renowned for its green chemistry expertise, is making significant strides in the cosmetics industry by developing innovative bio-based ingredients derived from flax agricultural waste.

This initiative transforms flax shives, typically discarded remnants from linen production, into high-value, sustainable compounds ideal for skincare formulations.

By harnessing its proprietary Ample process, the company extracts powerful natural molecules with protective and healing properties, positioning them as eco-friendly alternatives to conventional petroleum-based additives that have long drawn criticism for their environmental toll.

This breakthrough builds on more than four decades of R&D in green chemistry, enabling Plinius Labs to unlock the untapped chemical potential of plant biomass.

Flax shives, rich in bioactive elements, yield ingredients such as film formers and SPF boosters that enhance cosmetic performance while adhering to circular economy principles.

This not only minimizes waste but also slashes the carbon footprint associated with synthetic alternatives, appealing to brands chasing sustainability credentials amid rising consumer demand for “clean beauty.”

However, scaling this technology hasn’t been without obstacles.

Plinius Labs grappled with investment uncertainties, precise market targeting, and optimizing the Ample process for commercial viability.

To overcome these, the firm enlisted support from Green Assist, an EU-backed program designed to propel high-potential green ventures.

The partnership proved transformative: it pinpointed prospective investors, refined customer outreach strategies, and solidified comprehensive business and financial blueprints for an imminent pilot rollout.

Yves Boonen, CEO of Plinius Labs, highlighted the collaboration’s value, noting it lent essential credibility and sharpened the company’s trajectory toward bio-based cosmetic leadership.

Yves stated, “Potential investors were successfully identified as well as target customers for partnering contracts in the development of our proprietary process to produce bio-based cosmetic components.”

“The assigned expert showed dedication and expertise, keeping our team focused and enhancing the market credibility of Plinius Labs’ core competencies in green chemistry.”

This development resonates deeply with the burgeoning bio-based cosmetics sector, which is projected to expand rapidly as regulations tighten on non-renewable inputs.

Plinius Labs’ flax-derived innovations exemplify how agricultural byproducts can drive next-generation personal care, fostering partnerships with global formulators seeking verifiable green solutions.
