Dangote Refinery unveils Africa’s largest detergent raw material hub

This move not only curtails foreign exchange outflows but elevates Africa’s role in global petrochemicals, challenging dominance by Middle Eastern giants.

NIGERIA – Dangote Refinery has announced plans to construct Africa’s largest detergent raw material plant, a major step toward industrial self-sufficiency.

This facility is set to produce 400,000 tonnes of Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) annually within the refinery complex in Nigeria.

The plant targets LAB, a key surfactant feedstock for powdered and liquid detergents, meeting the continent’s full demand.

Current African output is limited to Algeria’s 100,000-tonne plant and Egypt’s 50,000-tonne facility, making Dangote’s project over four times larger combined.

Completion is slated for 30 months, positioning Nigeria as a dominant supplier and cutting import reliance.

Aliko Dangote revealed the plans during a refinery tour with NNPC’s Group CEO Bayo Ojulari, framing the site as an evolving industrial hub beyond fuel refining.

The initiative reduces Africa’s dependence on imported chemicals, enhances competitiveness for regional producers, and drives Nigeria’s diversification from crude exports.

By targeting the lucrative USD 85.6 billion African detergent chemicals market, it promises to slash import bills that currently exceed billions annually, particularly for West Africa’s 100% surfactant-dependent industry.

Partnerships with state-owned NNPC underscore national strategic alignment, fostering job creation in engineering, logistics, and skilled trades while bolstering Nigeria’s non-oil export base.

Dangote’s vision builds on prior milestones, including Honeywell-backed upgrades to double refinery output to 1.4 million barrels daily by 2028, enhancing feedstock availability for downstream ventures.

For Nigeria’s burgeoning FMCG sector, cheaper LAB translates to competitive pricing for brands like Unilever and local players, spurring innovation in eco-friendly formulations amid rising sustainability demands.

This aligns with Dangote Group’s petrochemical expansion, including fertilizers and cement, to boost local manufacturing.
