Lulalab Foundation launch Sense Fragrances to drive youth entrepreneurship in South Africa

The initiative not only highlights the potential of the beauty and FMCG sectors as engines of informal‑sector growth but also aligns with broader narratives around women’s economic empowerment, youth‑employment innovation, and public‑private partnerships that leverage corporate funds for scalable impact.

SOUTH AFRICA – The Lulalab Foundation has partnered with Yes4Youth and Afrika Tikkun to launch the Sense Fragrances programme, targeting unemployed young women from disadvantaged communities in South Africa amid high youth unemployment and economic inequality.

This program equips participants with discounted, high-quality fragrance and cosmetic products, monthly stipends for living expenses and stock purchases, and training in sales, marketing, customer service, and financial management to start sustainable microenterprises.

The collaboration leverages corporate YES funds to sponsor women, breaking down barriers such as a lack of startup capital in the thriving, low-cost fragrance market, where consumers drive job creation rather than formal businesses.

Lulalab Foundation CEO Errol Freeman emphasized shifting to creative social entrepreneurship, stating, “The formal job market is shrinking, with fewer opportunities available.”

“Corporations cannot absorb the large number of unemployed individuals, which is why we must think creatively and provide alternative, sustainable employment solutions for young people.”

“The fragrance industry is a progressive sector that offers earning potential, but upfront capital has traditionally been a major barrier to entry.”

Afrika Tikkun and Yes4Youth provide support structures, including community engagement and mentorship from experienced guides and social workers.

Participants receive startup kits with curated fragrances, turning them into revenue-generating businesses while building life skills, confidence, and resilience.

An AI-driven data system analyzes socioeconomic, cultural, and psychosocial needs to pair women with tailored social worker support for holistic growth.

Currently, 20 women participate, with ambitions to expand to 200 within 12 months, backed by monitoring frameworks for progress tracking and continuous improvement.

Sense Fragrances fosters a scalable ecosystem for entrepreneurship by inviting corporate sponsors to fund more self-employed women and promote economic development in underserved areas.

By merging business opportunity with social development, it models long-term transformation, recognizing young women’s potential in a consumer-led market.

The initiative taps into South Africa’s fragrance market, which, according to a GlobalData report, is valued at over USD 1 billion and is projected to grow at a CAGR of around 4–5% through 2026.

Growth is supported by strong retail distribution, evolving packaging formats, and increasing consumer interest in personal grooming.

The Lulalab Foundation is a social impact organization focused on empowering communities through education, skills development, and creative innovation.

Its initiatives often centre on youth empowerment, women’s entrepreneurship, and sustainable community projects, providing tools and opportunities that foster self-reliance and long-term growth.
