Reliance Retail acquires Kelvinator for USD 18.6M to accelerate growth in premium home appliances

This move aims to deepen consumer engagement and capitalizing on long-term opportunities in India’s dynamic market.

INDIA – Reliance Retail, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has acquired Kelvinator, an American home appliance manufacturer, for  USD 18.6 million in a move designed to accelerate growth in India’s surging premium home appliances market.

This acquisition is regarded as a strategic step toward strengthening Reliance Retail’s leadership within the fast-evolving sector of consumer durables.

Reliance Retail aims to accelerate growth in key appliance categories, including washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators and kitchen appliances.

The financial details of the transaction, while not officially disclosed by Reliance, were partially illuminated by Electrolux, which reported a gain of approximately ₹1,370 crore (USD 158.78 million) from the divestment of the Kelvinator trademark portfolio in India.

Since 2019, Reliance Retail has held the manufacturing and distribution rights for Kelvinator in India under a licensing agreement with Electrolux, selling a range of products, including refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and microwaves, through its Reliance Digital stores, e-commerce platforms, and general trade partners.

The full acquisition of the Kelvinator brand now grants Reliance complete ownership of the trademark, enabling it to exercise greater control over its strategic direction and product innovation.

Isha M. Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Retail Ventures Limited, emphasized the transformative potential of the acquisition, stating, “Our mission has always been to serve the diverse needs of every Indian by making technology accessible, meaningful, and future-ready.”

“The acquisition of Kelvinator marks a pivotal moment, enabling us to significantly broaden our offering of trusted global innovations to Indian consumers.”

The acquisition aligns seamlessly with Reliance Retail’s vision of “democratizing aspirational living” by making high-quality, globally benchmarked appliances accessible to a broader swath of Indian households.

With a retail network spanning 19,340 stores and a significant digital commerce presence, Reliance is uniquely positioned to amplify Kelvinator’s market reach.

Kelvinator gained iconic status in India during the ’70s and ’80s for its electric refrigerators and the tagline “The Coolest One.”

This move comes at a time when the Indian household appliances market is experiencing rapid expansion, projected to reach USD 64.29 billion in 2025 with a 7.33% annual growth rate through 2030.
