UK – Lush, a British cosmetics retailer, has conducted a clinical study that found that its Dream Cream Self-Preserving Body Lotion is safe for children with eczema-prone skin.
The self-preserving version of the cream is free from parabens compared to its original formula.
Lush evaluated the impact of consistent cream application on 50 children aged 3 to 12 diagnosed with mild to moderate eczema.
The children experienced less scratching and better sleep quality after using the popular, best-selling product, “cult classic.”
According to the company, the moisturiser soothes dry, itchy skin, relieves redness, and has been trusted by customers to soothe eczema symptoms in children.
Helen Ambrosen, Lush’s co-founder and product creator, highlighted oat milk as the key ingredient in Dream Cream’s self-preserving formula, making up over 30% of the product.
She stated, “ This enables us to get the best out of the oats and onto the skin.”
“The olive oil in the product is also lovely, but it’s a surface emollient that keeps the skin soft and from losing moisture.”
For four weeks, parents applied the lotion to the children’s affected areas, primarily the inner elbows, inner thighs, and backs of the knees.
Skin color was crucial in the study, as eczema can appear differently across various tones.
The study lab used the Fitzpatrick Grade to assess participants’ skin.
All tones from Grade 1 to 6 were represented, though most children had pale skin (Grade 2).
The assessment revealed significant improvements across all tested areas.
Regular use of Dream Cream Self-Preserving reduced eczema-affected regions over four weeks, and dryness, redness, scratch marks, and skin thickening improved significantly.
Dermatologists noted a reduction in skin redness on the thighs and elbows, along with a significant decrease in scaling and dryness across all body areas.
The survey showed that 85% of parents found the product effective after four weeks, while 85% of children enjoyed using it.
In a separate clinical trial, Lush compared the effectiveness of its preserved formula’s original Dream Cream, which contains synthetic preservatives, with the self-preserving version designed to remain fresh without added preservatives.
The self-preserving Dream Cream showed slightly better results than the preserved formula.
Lush discovered that 78% of parents found the preserved product effective after four weeks, while 70% of children enjoyed using it.
