This move positions the MyMicrobiome as a global leader and independent authority on microbiome-friendly product certification.

SWITZERLAND – MyMicrobiome, a microbiome-friendly certification body for personal care and cosmetic products, has launched MyMicrobiome Derm Standard – Eczema, the world’s first dedicated standard for evaluating products formulated for eczema-prone skin.
The launch marks a shift in how cosmetic and dermatological products are assessed for their impact on the skin microbiome of people suffering from atopic dermatitis (AD), more commonly known as eczema.
Unlike traditional tests that only check for product gentleness or non-irritancy, this standard uses advanced laboratory methods to determine if a product supports the fragile microbial balance on eczema-prone skin.
It sets distinct criteria for both adults and infants, recognizing the differences in skin biology across age groups.
Dr. Kristin Neumann, co-founder and CSO of MyMicrobiome, emphasizes the need for standards, stating, “Skin prone to eczema needs more than just mild formulations — it needs products that actively support microbial balance.”
Eczema is characterized by a weakened skin barrier and a disrupted microbial environment, with up to 70% of lesions colonized by Staphylococcus aureus, an organism that exacerbates inflammation and triggers flare-ups.
The new standard evaluates explicitly whether a product can limit harmful S. aureus, while preserving beneficial bacteria necessary for long-term skin health.
Certified laboratories in Switzerland and Germany conduct the product assessments, and only those products that fulfil all the scientific criteria are allowed to carry the “Microbiome-Friendly Derm Seal,” signalling both scientific validation and heightened consumer trust.
Eczema affects millions globally, causing chronic discomfort, pain, and significant impairment in quality of life.
Until now, most skin care products have not been tested for their effect on the sensitive skin microbiome of eczema sufferers, even though emerging research underlines the pivotal role of bacterial balance in disease management.
As more consumers seek out products tailored to specific dermatological needs, especially for chronic conditions like eczema, this certification gives clarity and assurance, distinguishing products that are truly microbiome-friendly from those that are merely mild or hypoallergenic.
Products such as Codex Labs’ Bia Eczema Relief Lotion have already been certified under the new standard, following clinical tests that showed significant improvements in itch, barrier function, hydration, and reduction of eczema severity scores in users.
The launch of this standard aligns with trending interest in microbiome science, following similar standards MyMicrobiome has previously introduced for acne-prone skin products.
