Intertrade Hellas selects ABB Quality Control System to advance tissue production efficiency

The ABB QCS features high-quality, long-life components designed for demanding industrial environments.

GREECE – Intertrade Hellas S.A., Greece’s leading tissue manufacturer, has partnered with ABB to install advanced quality control systems (QCS) across its Inofyta facility, a move set to elevate product quality, operational efficiency, and digital readiness.

The contract will see ABB deliver its Network Platform (NP) 1200-based QCS solution, complete with high-precision sensors and full integration into the facility’s distributed control system (DCS).

This technology will be deployed on both an existing tissue machine (TM1) and a new machine (TM2) scheduled to come online in 2026.

Founded in 1992, Intertrade Hellas operates four plants with 14 production lines, producing up to 78,000 tonnes of tissue annually.

Its portfolio spans two flagship retail brands and private-label products for major supermarket chains, with about 18% of its output exported to more than 28 countries across Europe and the Middle East.

The first ABB system is scheduled to be installed on TM1 by October 2025, with the second following the launch of TM2.

According to ABB’s Stefano Cinquina, Global Business Line Manager for Pulp and Paper, the collaboration is about enabling “leaner, cleaner, and more consistent operations” while building the foundation for future digital optimization.

Key components include ABB’s advanced basis weight and moisture sensors, which feed data into multivariable cross-directional control systems.

This enables tighter process control, reducing variability, optimizing raw material usage, and lowering energy consumption, all critical factors as the tissue industry faces rising costs and increasing sustainability demands.

The project also incorporates ABB Ability History, a secure and scalable industrial information platform that provides time-series process data for real-time monitoring, energy tracking, and integration with third-party systems via OPC UA.

This level of connectivity gives Intertrade Hellas a unified view of operations, enabling faster decision-making and proactive maintenance.

“Performance in challenging conditions, coupled with advanced data tools, gives us confidence in achieving long-term process optimization and production sustainability,” said Konstantinos Kintis, Technical Coordinator & Production Engineer at Intertrade Hellas.

“ABB is the perfect partner for our next phase of digital transformation.”

Industry analysts note that investments in QCS technology are becoming increasingly essential in the competitive tissue sector, where customer expectations for consistent quality are high and operational efficiency serves as a differentiator.

For Intertrade Hellas, the ABB partnership aligns with its sustainability agenda, aiming to progressively cut energy use, minimize waste, and reduce its environmental footprint, strengthening its position as a key regional player in Europe’s tissue manufacturing landscape.
