Lush Cosmetics closes UK and Ireland stores in protest against Gaza humanitarian crisis

Lush’s initiative highlights the role of corporate activism in addressing global human rights issues, utilising business platforms to convey powerful messages that extend beyond commerce.

EUROPE – Lush Cosmetics has taken a strong and unprecedented stance by closing all its UK and Ireland stores, factories, and online operations in protest against the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The closures occurred on September 3, 2025, in the UK and on September 4, 2025, in Ireland, with shop windows and the website displaying the message: “STOP STARVING GAZA – WE ARE CLOSED IN SOLIDARITY.”

This move is a direct protest against the Israeli government’s blockade preventing urgent humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza, which has led to starvation and suffering among the population there.

Lush’s action reflects the company’s alignment of its commercial activities with ethical principles and human rights advocacy.

The company expressed shared anguish with millions worldwide witnessing starvation in Gaza and chose this radical gesture to raise awareness and call for urgent international intervention.

Lush also plans to relaunch its bestselling fundraising soap, Watermelon Slice, with proceeds going to medical charities supporting Gaza, including those providing prosthetic limbs for injured civilians.

The decision to close its stores and lose a day’s earnings, estimated at around £350,000(USD 464,870) in sales plus £300,000(USD 403,590) in wages, underscores the company’s commitment to this cause and its hope to influence the UK government to halt arms sales to Israel and push for peace.

Lush’s protest is part of a broader call for international solidarity and is expected to inspire similar actions in other countries where Lush operates.

The company communicated that while this closure may inconvenience customers, it is a necessary expression of support for the people suffering in Gaza and a call to governments for immediate action to end the blockade and humanitarian disaster.

This protest by Lush comes amid reports of a severe, man-made famine in Gaza and ongoing conflict resulting in tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths.

Lush Cosmetics offers a vibrant array of handmade products across the categories of bath, body, skincare, haircare, and fragrance.

Known for its iconic bath bombs, solid shampoo bars, and fresh face masks, the brand emphasizes ethical sourcing and minimal packaging.

Its formulations are vegetarian, often vegan, and crafted with natural ingredients like essential oils, clays, and botanicals.
