SWEDEN – The Sherwin‑Williams Company has announced the opening of its new Research & Development Centre in Arlandastad, Sweden, reinforcing the company’s long‑term commitment to innovation and customer‑focused product development for the global wood coatings industry.
The new facility is designed as a state‑of‑the‑art hub for research, testing and collaboration that will support the development of next‑generation coating technologies for customers across Europe and beyond.
With a gross floor area of nearly 4,000 square metres, the two‑storey building features more than 20 dedicated laboratory rooms, modern collaboration spaces, six meeting rooms, and a conference and exhibition area capable of accommodating up to 150 people, while the facility has been designed to accommodate future growth and support up to 60 engineers, scientists and technical specialists.
The Arlandastad R&D Centre has been created to accelerate innovation across the portfolio, enabling closer cooperation between R&D, technical service, product management and customers, with the expanded capabilities helping Sherwin‑Williams develop solutions that address evolving market demands, regulatory requirements and sustainability expectations while continuing to deliver high‑performance coatings for manufacturers worldwide.
Cécile Berry, R&D Vice President of the Industrial Wood Division, said, “The opening of the Arlandastad R&D Centre gives our teams an advanced environment where scientific expertise, application testing and customer insight can come together more effectively.”
“By expanding our laboratory capabilities and collaboration spaces, we are better equipped to develop high-performance wood coating technologies that respond to changing market needs, support regulatory compliance and contribute to more sustainable solutions for our customers.”
Sustainability was a key consideration in the design of the new facility, which incorporates several energy‑efficient features including high‑performance insulation and extensive heat recovery systems that capture energy generated by technological processes, while the facility is powered by renewable energy sources in support of Sherwin‑Williams’ broader sustainability ambitions.
Strategically positioned within Sherwin‑Williams’ Swedish operations, the new centre complements the company’s extensive global network of research, manufacturing and technical support resources dedicated to the wood coatings industry.
By expanding its R&D capabilities Sherwin‑Williams aims to further enhance speed‑to‑market, technical expertise and the development of sustainable coating technologies for a rapidly evolving marketplace.
