This move is designed to signal presence, attentiveness and human connection in an era of declining face‑to‑face interaction.

SWITZERLAND – Givaudan has launched “Message in a Bottle,” an olfactive manifesto that reframes perfume not merely as a personal accessory but as a subtle, intentional social gesture.
The initiative is anchored in consumer research showing that social belonging is now a primary driver of fragrance choice, especially among Gen Z, and it sets a creative direction for new scent families that foster shared sensory experiences.
Givaudan positions the programme against a documented drop in in‑person socialisation, citing U.S. time‑use data that records a more than 20% collapse in face‑to‑face interaction between 2003 and 2023.
This is part of a broader cultural shift toward a “sociology of belonging” built on shared experiences, recognition and emotional presence rather than traditional institutions.
In this context, fragrance is recast as a form of non‑verbal communication that can counter loneliness and create openings for human interaction.
Xavier Renard, Global Head of Fine Fragrance at Givaudan, stated, “Givaudan’s expertise in and responsibility for decoding consumers’ current and future needs take on a new form through this creative programme.”
“Backed by extensive research from our Global Consumer Insights team, Message in a Bottle puts social belonging back at the centre of fragrance choice, building a new level of intimacy with consumers, and unlocking new avenues for unique creations in an increasingly competitive market.”
According to Givaudan’s Global Consumer Insights research, social belonging has emerged as one of the strongest and most contemporary motivators for wearing fragrance worldwide, resonating with 43% of women and 46% of men globally, with particularly strong relevance among Gen Z consumers.
This finding underpins the brand’s argument that scent choices are increasingly tied to identity, community and the desire to be seen and felt by others, not just to smell pleasant in isolation.
The “Message in a Bottle” narrative organises its olfactive exploration around four symbolic themes intended to catalyse connection: the “red thread” of human connection; elemental forces of nature; a tactile “neo‑animality”; and the universality of food culture.
Through these lenses, Givaudan aims to move beyond conventional “clean and fresh” tropes toward scents that act as vehicles for social alchemy, triggering emotional resonance and shared moments between people.
The company acknowledges Zignago Vetro as a partner whose glassmaking craftsmanship helps give tangible form to the emotions each bottle is meant to convey.
As a global leader in Fragrance & Beauty, Givaudan frames this initiative as both a trend forecast and a creative brief that can guide customers across fine fragrance, personal care, fabric care, hygiene and home care portfolios toward emotionally resonant scent stories.
By aligning product development with the belonging motive, the company seeks to help brands craft fragrances that function as a universal language of presence, supporting reconnection and, in its words, contributing to happier, healthier lives worldwide.
