BASF introduces Trilon G expanding its chelating agent solutions portfolio

This launch meets the global demand for sustainable solutions in the home care market.

NETHERLANDS – A German chemical company, BASF, has unveiled Trilon G, a chelating agent that utilizes glutamic acid diacetate (GLDA) chemistry.

Trilon G is designed for the Home Care and Industrial & Institutional (I&I) cleaning markets, where it enhances product effectiveness by significantly increasing the efficiency of surfactants through improved water softening.

With powerful chelating capabilities, it efficiently binds to metal ions, improving overall cleaning performance and delivering outstanding results in a range of applications such as manual dishwashing and laundry.

Amita Gupta, vice president, business management, Home Care and I&I Cleaning Americas, stated, “The launch of Trilon G represents a significant step forward in delivering on our commitment to both innovation and sustainability.”

“This ingredient not only enhances cleaning performance but also meets the growing demand for environmentally responsible solutions in the Home Care and I&I industries. We are proud to add this exceptional chelating agent to the BASF portfolio.”

According to the company, this ingredient enhances BASF’s existing lineup of chelating agents, including methylglycinediacetic acid (MGDA) and tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA), and responds to the growing demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable cleaning solutions.

Trilon G underscores BASF’s commitment to sustainability, as it is partially biobased with approximately 56% renewable carbon content.

In addition, its active component, GLDA, is recognised as readily biodegradable, achieving over 60% degradation within 28 days under the internationally accepted OECD 301D test.

This meets the global demand for sustainable solutions, enabling formulators to create products that strike a balance between cost, performance, and sustainability.

Recently, BASF introduced three biodegradable hair care agents at In-cosmetics Global 2025 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The new launches include Verdessence Maize, a natural styling polymer; Lamesoft OP Plus, a wax-based opacifier dispersion; and Dehyton PK45 GA/RA, a betaine surfactant derived from Rainforest Alliance Certified coconut oil.

The three ingredients are either biodegradable, sourced from renewable resources, or certified as sustainable.

These ingredients aim to meet the growing consumer demand for biodegradable, ethically sourced, and high-performing beauty products, while addressing key formulation challenges such as cold processing requirements and compatibility with sulfate-alternative surfactant systems.
