COLOMBIA – Essity, a Swedish multinational company specializing in hygiene and health products, has expanded its footprint in Colombia with the launch of a cutting-edge automated distribution centre in Rionegro, Antioquia.
Towering at the height of an 18-story building, this facility is designed to boost efficiency and sustainability in logistics operations.
The centre incorporates high-tech automation, including advanced stacker cranes and a sophisticated Warehouse Management System (WMS), optimizing dispatch processes by 33% while managing nearly half of Essity’s sales in Colombia.
In addition, the facility makes strides in environmental sustainability by cutting CO2 emissions by 97 tons annually annually, marking a 56% reduction from previous operations.
During its construction, the project generated over 900 jobs, and upon completion and upon completion, 300 employees joined the Rionegro workforce.
This hub will enable Essity to service 1,470 delivery points across Colombia and facilitate exports to 25 countries, reinforcing its commitment to technological innovation and sustainable development.
Diego Loaiza, general manager for the Andean and Caribbean Region at Essity, stated, “This investment strengthens our capabilities and reinforces our presence in Colombia, enabling us to fulfil our service promise to customers while expanding our reach.”
Essity has recently announced a significant leadership transition.
Ulrika Kolsrud has been appointed as the company’s new President and CEO, a role she will officially assume on June 1, 2025.
Kolsrud, who currently serves as President of Essity’s Health & Medical business unit, will take over from Magnus Groth, who announced earlier this year that he would be stepping down from his position.
Kolsrud will lead the company’s global strategy, innovation, and growth initiatives.
With her extensive experience in various areas of Essity’s business, including innovation, production, and sales, she has played a crucial role in steering the company’s Health & Medical division to success since 2019.
In her official statement following the announcement, she expressed enthusiasm for the new role, highlighting her vision for strengthening customer focus, enhancing innovation capabilities, and ensuring that Essity continues to expand its global presence in the hygiene and health industries.
