Essity expands portfolio with new pads designed for unpredictable flow

The launch is part of Essity’s broader commitment to closing menstrual health gaps by improving the reliability of everyday products and user well‑being.

SWEDEN – Essity has introduced a new generation of sanitary pads designed to better manage unpredictable menstrual flow, a problem that contributes to the wider global menstrual health gap.

Internal and market research show that six in 10 women worldwide feel anxious about leakage during sleep because of unpredictable flow, while one in three experience sudden gushes, underscoring the need for products that reflect real-life period challenges.

The company said the issue sits within a broader menstrual health gap, where stigma, limited knowledge and unmet product needs continue to affect women’s comfort, confidence and well-being.

With a next-generation fluid management system, Essity’s Smart Protect pads are designed to absorb sudden gushes immediately and distribute fluid more evenly, helping reduce leakage and deliver dependable protection day and night.

The product features an instant-absorbing centre, connected distribution channels and a body-adaptive shape, with Essity saying it can help deliver up to 100% leak-free days and nights.

Its development was informed by extensive ethnographic research across the consumer journey, including emotions, worries, and triggers throughout the day and night, as well as a first-of-its-kind clinical study conducted during sleep.

“At Essity, we are committed to advancing menstrual health through innovations that help solve real consumer problems and unmet needs,” said Tuomas Yrjölä, president of Personal Care at Essity.

“Unpredictable flow can create stress, discomfort and loss of confidence at any time, day or night. With this new generation of products, we are combining deep consumer insight with advanced innovation to deliver better protection, greater peace of mind and support for everyday well-being.”

Essity is rolling out Smart Protect in Latin America under the Nosotras and Saba brands, and in Europe under Bodyform, Libresse, Nana and Nuvenia.

The launch supports the company’s strategy of driving profitable growth through consumer-led innovation, with products aimed at addressing unmet needs, strengthening brand preference and expanding in period care.

By focusing on real consumer challenges and moving beyond basic protection, Essity says it is reinforcing its commitment to improving well-being, confidence and daily life for people globally.
