Lubrizol achieves PFAS-free milestone in peptide production

The company has pioneered the development of cosmetic peptides using greener, more sustainable manufacturing processes that align with environmental goals.

USA – Lubrizol, an American provider of speciality chemicals, has reached a significant milestone by achieving PFAS-free peptide production, bolstering its commitment to green chemistry and sustainability efforts.

The company has successfully eliminated the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), from its peptide synthesis process.

The new PFAS-free peptides introduced include Uplevity peptide, Uplevity e-Lift peptide, and Leuphasyl peptide.

These peptides are produced using Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS), a Nobel Prize-winning method that traditionally requires reagents such as TFA, a PFAS.

Although TFA is typically removed from final cosmetic products and is currently out of scope of some U.S. regulations, global environmental concerns and tightening regulations in both the U.S. and European Union have encouraged Lubrizol to eliminate PFAS from its production processes proactively.

Lubrizol emphasizes that their journey to this achievement has been guided by a science-driven, performance-validated approach to ensure the new PFAS-free peptides maintain the highest standards of quality and functionality.

Lubrizol’s sustainability philosophy is not about being the first but about “doing it right,” reflecting meticulous formulation work and regulatory foresight while demonstrating a deep respect for the planet.

One particular innovation is the Argireline Amplified peptide, which is naturally derived from renewable sources like sugar fermentation and avoids synthetic modifications.

This peptide is not only effective in skin care but is also readily biodegradable, meaning it does not accumulate in the environment and releases eco-friendly components.

This advancement builds on Lubrizol’s history of producing naturally derived peptides since 2020 and aligns with its broader corporate commitment to environmental responsibility, supporting a more resilient and transparent beauty industry.

Lubrizol is part of Berkshire Hathaway and operates globally with a strong focus on innovation that solves complex challenges while advancing sustainability goals.

This milestone represents not just an environmental achievement but also a step forward in designing sustainable, high-performance peptides that meet growing regulatory and consumer demands for safer beauty products.
