IFF revolutionizes laundry care with new Designed Enzymatic Biomaterials(DEB) platform

USA – International Flavours & Fragrances Inc. (IFF) has announced the first large-scale commercial application of its Designed Enzymatic Biomaterials™ (DEB) platform with the launch of a new laundry detergent formulation by a major consumer packaged goods company.
This innovative formulation features DEB technology, which enhances fabric softness and cleaning performance while replacing traditional non-biodegradable ingredients with biodegradable, bio-based alternatives.
Developed by IFF’s Health & Biosciences division, the DEB platform uses cutting-edge bioscience to produce unique, structurally diverse polysaccharides inspired by natural sugar chains but manufactured with industrial-level precision and consistency.
These biomaterials are engineered from renewable plant sugars and tailored to deliver specific performance benefits.
Leticia Gonçalves, president of IFF’s Health & Biosciences business, described DEB, stating, “DEB has the power to redefine how (bio)chemical materials will look in the 21st century: tailored, functional, nature-inspired and safer.”

In the laundry sector, DEB products, including the Lyrature™ portfolio, substitute persistent chemicals such as polyquaterniums, promoting improved surface modification and anti-redeposition effects.
IFF is expanding DEB production through Alpha Bio, its joint venture with Kemira, which operates a dedicated DEB manufacturing facility in Finland.
Alpha Bio plans to extend DEB-based solutions to multiple market sectors, starting in 2027, after thoroughly validating the technology and production processes.
This launch marks a significant advancement in bridging the gap between high performance and sustainability, offering consumers eco-conscious products that do not compromise efficacy.
This launch comes after IFF recently introduced ENVIROCAP, an innovative scent delivery system that is set to revolutionize the fabric care industry with its focus on sustainability.
ENVIROCAP is designed to deliver long-lasting fragrance performance while meeting the growing demand from consumers and the industry for eco-friendly home and fabric care solutions.
This product has a proprietary biopolymer that enables controlled and sustained release of scent throughout the entire laundry cycle, from washing to wearing.
