Croda reports new data for its KeraBio K31 hair repair

KeraBio K31 is 99% naturally derived, vegan-suitable and biodegradable.

UK – Croda, a British speciality chemical company, has announced a landmark in hair care with new data for its biomimetic ingredient KeraBio K31, revealing full efficacy at just 0.05% active inclusion.

This biotech-powered, vegan keratin ingredient acts at a molecular level to repair hair bonds, strengthen hair, and restore the hair to a virgin profile, resembling untreated hair.

The ingredient is backed by 15 years of proteomics research and offers formulators the ability to develop high-performance, eco-friendly products with reduced active ingredient use, supporting sustainability efforts.

KeraBio K31 is 99% naturally derived, vegan-suitable, biodegradable, and compliant with EU/UK REACH regulations.

In addition, this ingredient has been shortlisted for the Product Innovation Award at the Bio-based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA) Demeter Awards 2025, underscoring Croda’s leadership in sustainable bio-based cosmetic technologies.

Scientifically, it delivers stronger hair than leading bond builders and improves with continuous use, suitable for leave-in and rinse-off formulations including conditioners, shampoos, and styling products.

Stephanie Neplaz, Head of Hair Category at Croda Beauty, stated, “KeraBio K31’s potency enables formulators to develop products that deliver superior results using fewer active ingredients.”

“It sets a new benchmark in biomimetic bond building technology and delivers a step-change in what we can now offer our customers to elevate hair health and sustainability.”

This innovation paves the way for brands to elevate product performance and environmental responsibility in hair care.

This comes after Croda recently announced the official assignment of an INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient) name for its innovative hair repair ingredient, KeraBio K31, as Hydrolysed sr-(Tripeptide-137 Hexapeptide-40 sh-Polypeptide-184 sh-Polypeptide-146).

The confirmation ensures standardization, regulatory clarity, and enhanced transparency for formulators and cosmetic manufacturers seeking advanced solutions for hair care.

KeraBio K31 is the result of protein engineering and bio-based technology, developed specifically to address damaged hair by mimicking the function and structure of natural keratin.

Extensive testing has demonstrated that KeraBio K31 can significantly improve hair strength, manageability, and hydration, while reducing visible signs of damage from heat styling, coloring, and environmental stressors.

By securing an official INCI designation, Croda’s KeraBio K31 is now recognized globally under a standardized nomenclature, enabling easy inclusion in product formulations and ingredient lists.
