Steven Schnittger joins Cellugy board of directors

This appointment further strengthens the company’s leadership team as it advances innovation in biofabricated ingredients.

DENMARK – Cellugy, a Danish biotech startup, has announced the appointment of Steven Schnittger, a seasoned veteran from The Estée Lauder Companies, to its Board of Directors to spearhead its biofabricated ingredient strategy.

Schnittger brings over 30 years of expertise in the global cosmetics and personal care industry, particularly in driving innovation and biotechnology adoption for leading beauty brands.

At Estée Lauder, he notably served as Vice President of Global Microbiology and Fermentation, where he was key in integrating biotechnology platforms and sustainable ingredient technologies into mainstream beauty portfolios.

This strategic addition to Cellugy’s board comes as the biotechnology company scales its technology to meet rising demand for sustainable personal care solutions. Schnittger’s deep knowledge of the nexus of science, product innovation, and global consumer trends is expected to accelerate Cellugy’s mission to unlock biofabricated materials that deliver novel product claims, superior sensory experiences, and sustainable performance, features that traditional petrochemical-based ingredients cannot provide.

His experience fostering collaborations with biotech innovators and setting product safety and quality standards will further support Cellugy’s goal of developing scalable, sustainable, and revolutionary formulation capabilities.

Isabel Álvarez-Martos, CEO and Co-founder of Cellugy, emphasized on the appointment of Schnittger, stating, “Steven’s appointment marks an important milestone for Cellugy as we scale our technology to meet the growing demand for sustainable solutions in personal care.”

Cellugy’s proprietary EcoFLEXY™ fermentation platform produces biodegradable cellulose and other biopolymers derived from bacteria, pioneering sustainable, high-performance alternatives to replace microplastics and petrochemical ingredients in consumer and industrial applications.

Founded in 2018 and based in Søborg, Denmark, Cellugy has spent the last seven years refining its science and technology to meet industry performance standards.

The company’s innovative solutions follow green chemistry principles to offer safe, sustainable, and biodegradable ingredient alternatives.

It has been recognized among Europe’s top plastic-alternative startups and attracted investment from leading backers, reflecting its growing reputation in biotechnology-driven materials for personal care and beyond.

Meanwhile Cellugy recently secured €8.1 million (USD 9.25 million) in funding from the European Union’s LIFE Programme to scale production of its cellulose-based rheology modifier, EcoFLEXY

EcoFLEXY is designed to deliver superior texture, stability, and sensory performance, qualities essential for cosmetics manufacturers, while avoiding the environmental and health hazards associated with petrochemical ingredients.

The funding will support the BIOCARE4LIFE project, a four-year initiative aimed at scaling up EcoFLEXY’s production and commercial validation.
