Shiseido leverages AI to accelerate ingredient biodegradability and safety testing

Shiseido intends to make the model publicly available, enabling widespread adoption to minimize ecological footprints and promote circular economy principles in beauty formulations.

JAPAN – Shiseido, a global leader in cosmetics, has unveiled groundbreaking AI-powered tools designed to ensure the biodegradability and safety of ingredients used in beauty products.

These innovations address pressing industry challenges by processing vast chemical datasets that traditional methods struggle to handle efficiently.

By integrating artificial intelligence with its decades of research expertise, Shiseido aims to accelerate sustainable development, reduce environmental impact, and meet escalating demands for transparency from consumers and retailers alike.

At the center of this launch is Shiseido’s AI-based biodegradability evaluation system, developed in collaboration with Japan’s National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE).

This tool employs advanced quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling to predict how cosmetic raw materials decompose into harmless substances like water and carbon dioxide under natural conditions.

Conventional lab tests are notoriously time-intensive, often taking one to two months, while incurring high costs and yielding inconsistent results due to reliance on specialized human judgment.

In contrast, the AI delivers rapid, reliable predictions by analyzing molecular structures against a comprehensive database of over 2,000 compounds.

This breakthrough holds immense promise for the cosmetics sector, where microplastics and non-degradable ingredients have drawn regulatory scrutiny. .

According to Shiseido, early applications could revive interest in bio-based alternatives, fostering innovation in products like cleansers and emulsions.

Complementing the biodegradability tool is Shiseido’s AI-driven safety information system, which automates the collection and evaluation of critical data on hazards such as repeated-dose toxicity, skin sensitization, and eye irritation.

Unlike manual reviews prone to oversight or bias, this system cross-references global databases in seconds, flagging risks with high accuracy.

It empowers researchers to prioritize groundbreaking formulations over routine data sifting, while unlocking the potential of underutilized ingredients previously dismissed due to incomplete safety profiles.

This is particularly timely as major retailers like Sephora and Ulta Beauty enforce stricter supplier standards on ingredient transparency and sustainability.

Shiseido’s tools align with these shifts, helping brands comply faster and build consumer trust through verifiable eco-credentials.

These developments underscore Shiseido’s “Sustainability Innovation 2030” vision, which emphasizes low-impact materials amid climate pressures and resource scarcity.

By reducing reliance on subjective expertise, AI systems streamline R&D pipelines, potentially slashing development timelines by months.

For the global beauty industry, valued at over USD 500 billion, these tools signal a data-driven paradigm shift.

They not only mitigate risks from non-biodegradable synthetics but also pave the way for personalized, planet-friendly cosmetics.

As Shiseido shares its technologies openly, competitors and startups stand to benefit, accelerating collective progress toward greener standards.

This initiative exemplifies how AI can harmonize beauty’s aesthetic allure with environmental stewardship, setting a benchmark for ethical innovation in 2026 and beyond.
