Primient unveils Zemea-powered colour care collection

The collection supports daily use, colour longevity, moisture, and hair protection.

USA – Primient, an American leading producer of food and industrial ingredients, has launched its new Zemea Colour Care Collection, a bio-based hair colour formulation platform.

The collection is designed to deepen colour deposition, boost shine, combat dryness, and promote scalp health while maintaining cruelty-free, sustainable Clean Beauty standards.

The collection was unveiled at NYSCC Suppliers’ Day 2026 and builds on Primient’s previous collaboration with Sensient’s Arianor water-soluble basic cationic dyes, creating efficacious, safe, and cruelty-free offerings for both professional and consumer markets.

The collection features seven key products: Purest Base Clarifying Shampoo,  Chroma-Cashmere Deposit Shampoo, Silk Infusing Zemea Colour Conditioner, Satin Strands Stay In Treatment, Vervain Vitality Scalp Serum, Oil-Free Scalp Oil Treatment and Clear Scalp Spray.

Zemea Propanediol, a 100% bio-based 1,3-propanediol, outperforms traditional propylene glycol by acting as a highly efficient, non-irritating polar solvent that improves dye partitioning while conditioning hair and preserving scalp microbiome balance.

Its specific Hansen solubility parameters and linear structure make it an exceptional carrier for polar actives, including water-soluble dyes, thereby subtly swelling the hair fibre to facilitate deeper dye penetration at the cuticle-cortex boundary without the severe structural disruption caused by ammonia.

Performance testing showed that formulations with 3% Zemea Propanediol exhibited superior colour evenness, greater saturation, and improved wash fastness compared to control formulations using propylene glycol.

Zemea also acts as a superior humectant and emollient, binding moisture within the hair shaft without glycerin’s tackiness, which plasticises the fibre and helps the cuticle scales lie flat for specular light reflection and high shine.

The ingredient is MyMicrobiome-certified for scalp, confirming it maintains commensal bacterial balance rather than stripping it, and it boosts antimicrobial and preservative efficacy by lowering water activity, potentially reducing preservative load and irritation.

The Zemea Colour Care Collection reflects Primient’s unwavering commitment to health, safety, and cruelty-free Clean Beauty, with Zemea being 100% bio-based and produced through fermentation of industrial corn glucose derived from regeneratively grown dent corn in the U.S. Midwest, rather than petroleum derivatives.

It generates 84% fewer greenhouse gas emissions and consumes 70% less energy cradle-to-gate compared to petroleum-based propylene glycol, and it carries EPA Safer Choice, MyMicrobiome® friendly, and USDA BioPreferred certifications.

The collection is ammonia-free, eliminating harsh pH shifts and achieving deep, long-lasting colour deposition, and it also eliminates propylene glycol and ammonia to reduce skin irritation potential while supporting Leaping Bunny or PETA certifications.

Consumers are demanding multifunctional hair care products that offer UV protection, preserve colour, and support overall hair health.

Sean Gahan and Marjorie Morris are assessing market adoption of their semi-permanent hair colour and maintenance portfolio before expanding into additional systems, and they expect emerging trends in professional hair care to create innovation opportunities in which Zemea Propanediol provides differentiated value through high-performing formulations with improved health and safety profiles.
