USA – Columbia SkinCare has unveiled a patent-pending photoprotection system that shifts sun protection from a passive, filter-based model to an active, biologically intelligent approach designed to support the skin’s own defence and repair mechanisms.
The company positions the breakthrough as a response to the industry’s long-standing “static” paradigm of sun protection, formulations that primarily block or absorb UV radiation without engaging the skin’s biology.
Columbia SkinCare CEO Steven Rosenfeld explained that the team deliberately reframed the problem: instead of asking only how to stop UV from reaching the skin, they asked how photoprotection could be “dynamic, responsive and biologically intelligent.”
The result is a proprietary system engineered to work in harmony with the skin’s natural processes, aiming to mitigate photodamage at the cellular level while preserving the skin’s renewal and ecosystem functions.
According to Columbia SkinCare, the platform integrates advanced components intended to support the skin’s natural response to UV-induced stress; help maintain proper cellular turnover and desquamation (the shedding of surface cells); reduce downstream effects associated with cumulative photodamage; and enhance overall skin resilience to environmental exposure.
The system “stabilizes skin across molecular, cellular and microbial layers,” moving from passive protection to “active biological support” that bolsters the skin’s capacity to defend, repair and adapt under stress.
The company highlights mechanisms such as supporting the resolution of DNA damage, reducing oxidative stress, and maintaining RNA integrity during UV exposure, processes it describes as critical to preventing cellular dysfunction and premature ageing.
By drawing on principles of skin biology, microbiome balance, and cellular signalling, the company says it is pushing the boundaries of what topical skincare can achieve.
Internally, preliminary evaluations suggest the approach may offer advantages over traditional sunscreen formulations, particularly in addressing long-term skin health and visible ageing linked to chronic sun exposure.
The patent-pending technology is expected to underpin a new category of photoprotection products currently under development, with the company’s stated goal shifting from simply blocking UV to “preserving the biological systems that define healthy skin.”
Columbia SkinCare is also considering licensing opportunities for the technology.
