Rissmann unveils paper-based shell box for fragrance packaging

The interior is fully customizable and can accommodate moulded pulp inserts, secondary boxes, or other product-fixing elements to suit diverse luxury SKUs.

FRANCE – Rissmann has introduced the Shell Box, a paper-based luxury packaging solution designed primarily for fragrance gifting, with applications also extending to wine and spirits.

The box leverages a fixed internal structure paired with interchangeable outer sleeves, enabling brands to reuse the same core packaging across seasonal campaigns, such as Advent calendars, Valentine’s Day, or Christmas collections, without retooling production lines, since only the printed outer cover changes.

The Shell Box is engineered as a monomaterial system composed entirely of paper and cardboard, eliminating magnets, plastics, or mixed components that typically complicate recycling streams.

This design aligns with tightening regulatory frameworks like the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which increasingly mandates recyclability and material simplicity.

According to a Rissmann spokesperson, the solution delivers a premium, photogenic presentation, featuring a built-in display stage, while maintaining industrial manufacturing efficiency and improved end-of-life recyclability.

Central to the Shell Box’s value proposition is its emphasis on the unboxing experience, a trend heavily influenced by social media and influencer culture, particularly among Gen Z consumers who view product reveals as participatory, shareable moments.

According to the brand, the box’s opening mechanism relies solely on paper engineering: a single, controlled motion transitions the package from a protective state to a stable, self-supporting presentation mode, creating a deliberate “discovery” moment without requiring additional hardware like magnets or hinges.

By decoupling structural function from decorative expression, the Shell Box supports agile marketing strategies, brands can rapidly deploy limited-edition designs for influencer kits or holiday promotions while maintaining consistent underlying packaging logistics.

This modularity responds to broader industry shifts where packaging increasingly serves as both a functional container and a storytelling vehicle, especially in premium segments where visual impact and sustainability credentials are equally critical to purchase decisions.

This move comes shortly after Rissmann recently unveiled its Circular Luxury Packaging Solution, designed for premium sectors including perfumery, gourmet foods, wine and spirits, as well as fashion, leather goods, and high-end electronics.

Departing from conventional cylindrical packaging with plain, straight edges, the design transforms the rim profiles of both base and lid into a central aesthetic feature: precisely sculpted contours align to create a dynamic, three-dimensional visual effect when viewed from different angles.

When closed, the box reveals a circular, mountain-shaped aperture that exposes a luminous gold-gradient interior, producing a subtle yet striking reveal.

Both the inner and outer linings utilize selected papers from Fedrigoni’s Sirio Color range, chosen for their color fidelity and premium tactile qualities.

The system supports extensive customization: brands can specify bespoke die-cut patterns and combine a wide array of wrapping papers, decorative techniques, and finishing treatments to craft a distinctive visual identity and brand narrative.
