This Nigeria-first launch addresses local vulnerabilities while setting a model for anti-counterfeit efforts in emerging markets.

NIGERIA – Unilever, Vaseline’s parent company, has developed the “Vaseline Authenticator” to complement regulatory enforcement with a direct, accessible consumer solution.
Vaseline launched the campaign in Nigeria to tackle rampant counterfeiting of skincare products, enlisting Prince Chris Okagbue of the Onitsha Kingdom as its prominent ambassador.
The campaign line, “Don’t let fakes get under your skin”, ties together product safety and brand messaging.
This initiative turns the infamous “Nigerian prince” scam stereotype on its head, making it a symbol of authenticity and empowering consumers to verify products instantly via a free WhatsApp-based tool.
Counterfeit Vaseline body oils pose significant health risks in Nigeria due to unregulated ingredients, threatening both consumer safety and brand integrity.
Created by Leo Singapore (part of Publicis Groupe), the campaign launched in early April 2026 across social media, out-of-home ads, retail displays, and high-traffic areas such as Lekki and Surulere.
Consumers scan a QR code or click a link from campaign materials to access the chatbot, framed as the “Prince’s assistant” for engaging interaction.
Users upload photos of the front and back of their Vaseline body oil packaging, and AI analysis delivers an instant verdict on authenticity.
The tool targets body oils, the most counterfeited Vaseline category in Nigeria’s skincare market, using a platform ubiquitous in daily life to minimize barriers, no app downloads required.
Prince Chris Okagbue stars in the hero film, acknowledging the global scam trope before demonstrating the tool and discarding a deceptive fake bottle to highlight the realism of counterfeits.
His involvement builds cultural credibility and trust, positioning him as “the real thing” in a market wary of fakes valued globally at over USD 467 billion.
Shazan Zahir, Head of Beauty and Wellbeing at Unilever International, emphasized the tool’s simplicity: “Counterfeit products are a growing concern, making authenticity simple to check using a tool people already have.
Activations span major retail chains, neighbourhood stores, and digital channels, driving QR scans for on-the-spot checks.
Early coverage highlights its potential to restore consumer confidence in a safety-critical category, blending humour, royalty, and tech for broad resonance.
Vaseline’s fusion of royal endorsement, WhatsApp accessibility, and AI verification offers a practical shield against fakes, prioritizing skin health and brand loyalty in Nigeria’s competitive skincare landscape.
