Estée Lauder marks Whitman’s 60th anniversary with strategic manufacturing investment

By bringing production in-house, Estée Lauder reduces its reliance on external partners and gains more operational control in the home fragrance market, which the company says is seeing sustainable growth.

UK – The Estée Lauder Companies has announced a strategic investment to strengthen its UK manufacturing network as its Whitman facility in Petersfield celebrates its 60th anniversary.

This move reinforces the company’s long-standing commitment to British craftsmanship, innovation, and growth in the prestige fragrance sector.

This investment marks a significant expansion of Estée Lauder’s manufacturing capabilities, as the company will integrate select luxury candle and home fragrance capabilities from long-standing partner Contract Candles, the creator of luxury candles and scent diffusers, into its UK manufacturing operations.

The company will assume the lease of one of Contract Candles’ two UK facilities and welcome approximately 50 employees into the organization over time, while also adding new research and development and quality capabilities to its UK operations.

Following the integration, the Whitman facility will serve as the primary manufacturing base for candles across The Estée Lauder Companies’ prestige brand portfolio worldwide, including Jo Malone London, which is the number-one luxury home fragrance brand in the UK, as well as TOM FORD and AERIN prestige fragrance and candle lines.

Roberto Canevari, executive vice president and chief value chain officer at ELC, stated, “The UK plays a significant role in our global manufacturing network, and this investment in candle and home fragrance manufacturing reflects our continued commitment to British craftsmanship and innovation.”

“Bringing these activities more closely into our manufacturing network will strengthen resilience and support our ability to continue delivering the exceptional quality and artistry that define our brands.”

This investment enhances operational control and long-term resilience in a strategically important category while reinforcing the UK as a centre of excellence for fragrance craftsmanship and manufacturing.

The Whitman facility currently produces over 90 million units of skin care and fragrance products annually for brands like Clinique and La Mer, and adding candles to the mix builds on the facility’s existing expertise in fragrance manufacturing.

Since fiscal 2020, The Estée Lauder Companies has invested USD 72 million in its Whitman facility across automation systems, quality systems, sustainability initiatives, advanced manufacturing capabilities, apprenticeship programs, and STEM outreach programs in partnership with local universities.

This strategic investment comes as home fragrance emerges as a major growth opportunity driven by rising consumer demand for luxury scent experiences, with Jo Malone London maintaining its position as the number-one luxury home fragrance brand in the UK.

Innova Market Insights data indicates a 37% compound annual growth rate in home air care launches between April 2020 and March 2025, and a Clorox report found that 89% of all consumers say a clean-smelling home positively impacts their self-image, while 89% of Gen Z look forward to creating spaces of relaxation rather than viewing their homes as sources of chores.
