Unilever redesigns laundry capsules to elevate cleaning performance

The launch directly addresses a key pain point for 28% of laundry capsule users, residue from incomplete dissolution.

UK – Unilever has launched a complete reinvention of its laundry capsule architecture, introducing a new rapid-dissolve, zero-residue film that fully dissolves even in energy-efficient quick and cold wash programmes.

The new Dirt Is Good capsules represent a complete redesign, moving from three chambers to an advanced four-chamber design where all four chambers dissolve simultaneously during the wash cycle, releasing a synchronized blend of technologies that work rapidly on stain removal, whiteness, and fragrance delivery.

This four-chamber redesign incorporates two proprietary technologies, including Nano-Power™, a stain-fighting technology delivering increased cleaning actives per dose specifically targeting tough and dried-in stains, which are the number one concern among laundry capsule users, and Nano-Sense™, an advanced fragrance system providing both an instant burst of scent and long-lasting freshness for outstanding fragrance at every wash stage.

The formulation also includes Polyshield technology, which builds up a protective layer on the fabric’s surface from the first wash, preventing greasy, fatty, or oily stains from forming and ensuring they are repelled during the wash cycle.

The clear film encasing the capsules dissolves quickly, leaving no residue even in energy-efficient quick and cold wash programmes that consumers are increasingly using, directly addressing residue concerns that affect 28% of users.

This fast-dissolving film is engineered to fully dissolve in cold water and during short wash cycles, including ice-cold water, and works on all stain types across both natural and synthetic fibres.

The technology reduces the need for pre-soaking, pre-treatment, or re-washing and, when used in short, cold cycles, can save consumers up to 60% on energy per wash.

According to Unilever, this new Dirt Is Good laundry capsule technology is designed to drive premiumisation in the laundry category, with the four-chamber capsule designed to tackle the toughest stains while delivering a premium laundry experience.

The new product targets the full detergent capsule range upgrade, with technology that works on all types of stains. It represents Unilever’s biggest laundry brands, including Dirt Is Good, Persil, Skip, OMO, and Surf Excel, and continues to lead in capsule-format innovation.

This rapid-dissolve, zero-residue film builds on Unilever’s earlier innovation where the re-engineered capsule membrane was fully biodegradable and the fastest dissolving on the market, with the new four-chamber design with Nano-Power™ and Nano-Sense™ taking this forward with enhanced cleaning performance and fragrance delivery while maintaining the fast-dissolving film properties.
