Kiehl’s unveils new circularity efforts for Climate Week

Through these comprehensive actions, Kiehl’s is not only reducing its environmental footprint but also inspiring consumers and the beauty industry to join in the pursuit of sustainability.

USA – Kiehl’s,  an American cosmetics brand retailer that specializes in skin, hair, and body care products,  has committed to a bold sustainability mission, Mission Renewal, which aims to transform 100% of its packaging into formats that are refillable, reusable, or made from recycled materials by 2030.

This initiative reflects the brand’s dedication to advancing a circular economy by reducing waste and encouraging responsible consumer behaviour.

One of the standout innovations is their refill pouches, which use significantly less plastic, ranging from 61% to 81% less compared to traditional packaging.

This allows customers to refill their favourite products multiple times, thereby reducing environmental impact.

To support this shift, Kiehl’s has introduced “Refillery Stations” in retail locations where customers can conveniently refill their product containers, promoting waste reduction and engagement with sustainable beauty practices.

The brand also runs a “Recycle and Be Rewarded” program, incentivizing consumers to return used containers for recycling, which has successfully diverted substantial amounts of plastic waste from landfills across multiple countries.

In a nod to its heritage, Kiehl’s has renewed its connection to Mount Everest by partnering with Nepalese NGO Sagarmatha Next and the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee to back the “Carry Me Back” initiative.

This program focuses on removing 22 tons of waste from the Everest region over the next two years, emphasizing proper recycling and responsible tourism.

Complementing this effort, Kiehl’s collaborated with environmental artist Benjamin Von Wong to create impactful sculptures from collected plastic debris, including the “Hand of Everest,” installed along the trekking route to Base Camp.

These art installations serve as powerful reminders to trekkers and climbers about the importance of reducing single-use plastics and adopting refillable solutions on their journeys.

Beyond packaging, Kiehl’s sustainability efforts extend to sourcing abundant, renewable ingredients, prioritizing biodegradable formulas, manufacturing with renewable energy, and supporting inclusive sourcing initiatives that provide work opportunities to underrepresented communities.

Kiehl’s offers science-backed skincare, body care, and haircare products rooted in its apothecary heritage. Its bestsellers include the Ultra Facial Cream, Calendula Toner, and Powerful-Strength Vitamin C Serum.

The brand also features targeted lines, such as Rare Earth for pore care and Facial Fuel for men. Body favorites include Creme de Corps and Ultimate Strength Hand Salve.
