Sami-Sabinsa Group invests USD 15M in new herbal manufacturing hub in India

Its proximity to India’s east and west coast ports optimizes logistics for ingredient distribution.

INDIA – Sami-Sabinsa Group, an Indian producer of nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, standardized herbal extracts, fine chemicals, speciality chemicals, probiotics and enzymes, has launched its USD 15 million Hassan Unit-2 facility, boosting its herbal ingredients production with a focus on sustainability and global market expansion.

NSF cGMP-certified site in Karnataka’s Hassan Pharma SEZ represents the company’s ninth manufacturing hub, building on the 2020 Hassan Unit-1 for APIs, and aims to elevate both existing and novel product lines.

Covering 15 acres, the facility reserves 30-40% of space for expansion and over 30% for green belts to promote biodiversity. It integrates advanced utilities like vacuum systems, cooling/chilling compressors, steam boilers, and 100% power backup generators, while prioritizing worker comfort and energy savings.

Hassan Unit-2 targets herbal products, both patented and generic, to meet worldwide demand, with full cGMP adherence and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) via segregated effluent tanks, LTDS/HTDS processing, and Multiple Effect Evaporator systems. Rainwater harvesting pits and channels further enhance water stewardship, ensuring no wastewater exits the premises.

Dr. Anju Majeed, Sami-Sabinsa Executive Group Chairperson, stated, “The new production facility in Hassan will strengthen our ability to serve customers worldwide with both patented and off-patent herbal products.”

“It is also expected to significantly enhance the Sami-Sabinsa Group’s export performance and contribute to a strong increase in company revenue.”

Meanwhile, earlier in January 2025, a Sabinsa facility earned praise from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) for its top safety, fire measures, health protocols, and eco-practices—including a 70-meter self-supported boiler chimney that meets emission norms and ZLD wastewater handling.

Shaheen Majeed, global CEO and managing director, emphasized this as proof of commitment to employee safety, community ties, and ecological balance amid industrial progress.

The venture promises about 250 jobs for locals in Hassan and forms part of a deliberate strategy to scale herbal offerings while innovating, amid strong industry demand for nutraceutical solutions.
