Global cosmetic preservatives market to reach USD 0.77 billion by 2031, reports finds

Demand for cosmetic preservatives is driven by the need to protect formulations against bacteria, yeast, and mould while maintaining product quality over time.

GLOBAL – The global cosmetic preservatives market is projected to increase from USD 0.59 billion in 2026 to USD 0.77 billion by 2031, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 5.7% over the forecast period, according to a report by MarketsandMarkets.

This growth is driven by manufacturers’ continued prioritisation of product safety, shelf life, and microbial stability in personal care formulations.

In addition, the growing global emphasis on consumer safety, together with the rapid rise of clean-label personal care products, is driving demand for advanced preservative systems used in lotions, serums, and hair care products.

Ingredients such as organic acids and plant-based extracts are valued for their strong antimicrobial performance and formulation stability, helping cosmetic products achieve shelf lives of more than two years.

In markets such as Asia Pacific and Europe, manufacturers are also being pushed toward recyclable, bio-based preservatives as urbanization expands beauty demand and ingredient transparency becomes more important.

This shift also helps reduce regulatory costs and strengthens supply chains for safer, more skin-friendly cosmetic formulations.

Phenolic preservatives held the largest share of the global market in 2025, as they offer strong stability and effective antimicrobial action across a wide pH range.

Beyond preservation, phenolic compounds can also function as antioxidants and skin-conditioning agents, aligning with consumer demand for cleaner-label products.

The colour cosmetics segment is expected to post the fastest CAGR during the forecast period.

This growth is supported by rising global demand for products such as foundations, lipsticks, and eye cosmetics, driven by stronger beauty awareness and the influence of social media.

Colour cosmetics are more exposed to microbial contamination because they are frequently opened, exposed to air and light, and used directly on the skin, making effective preservation essential.

The demand is also being driven by the popularity of long-lasting, multifunctional makeup products, which require more advanced preservative systems.

Ongoing product innovation and frequent launches are further fueling this segment’s expansion.

Asia Pacific leads the market due to its largest consumer base and a rapidly expanding domestic beauty industry, especially in China and India.

Growth is being supported by higher disposable incomes, urbanization, and greater awareness of personal grooming and hygiene.

Consumer preferences in the region are also shifting toward premium, water-based, and natural products, underscoring the need for effective preservation solutions that maintain quality and safety.

In addition, the region benefits from major manufacturing hubs and supportive government policies that help companies scale production and speed up product development.
