Lactips, SmartSolve launch water-soluble beauty packaging with PureNil 0 for plastic-free recycling, dispersal

The technology pairs a protein-based polymer from Lactips with PureNil 0 paper from SmartSolve to produce a flexible film that disappears in water.

FRANCE – Lactips has partnered with SmartSolve to launch a water-soluble, plastic-free packaging solution for beauty and personal care products, with the PureNil 0 bio-based paper dispersing in water without leaving microplastic residues.

The packaging combines SmartSolve’s PureNil 0 functionalised bio-based paper with Lactips’ natural protein-based coating, creating a flexible, printable material that disperses in water after use, enabling complete biodegradation and eliminating the need for mechanical recycling of contaminated materials.

Bertrand Dupeyroux, VP of Sales and Marketing at Lactips, stated that the product is not subject to plastic tax under PPWR since it is of natural origin, providing a regulatory advantage for early adopters in the packaging sector.

PureNil 0 Paper and Natural Protein Coating Combine for Full Dispersibility

The technology pairs a protein-based polymer from Lactips with PureNil 0 paper from SmartSolve to produce a flexible film that disappears in water.

The solution is designed for dry personal care applications such as powder soap, solid detergent, and bath products, as Lactips’ water-soluble material is not compatible with wet formulations, which could lead to product interaction issues.

Lactips, founded in 2014 from research at Université de Saint-Etienne, transitioned to an industrial operation in 2022 with 40 employees and exports products to the United States.

SmartSolve, also holding a patent covering the paper and sealant as fully natural components, initially targets North American and Central American markets, with future expansion plans for Europe and Asia.

Market-Ready Solution Signals Future Applications Beyond Beauty

Jonathan Jakubowski, CEO and co-founder of SmartSolve, said that Lactips has been the ideal partner in delivering plastic-free innovation, which has accelerated the company’s journey toward making packaging no longer trash.

Both companies view the initiative as the first step in a broader collaboration to accelerate the adoption of plastic-free packaging worldwide.

Bertrand Dupeyroux noted that the luxury sector is under-represented in circularity and is actively seeking innovation, making this market a key target for the new solution.

Future applications under development include water-soluble labels and injection-moulded parts for agriculture and outdoor sports.

The packaging also avoids PPWR plastic taxes, providing a regulatory advantage for early adopters in the packaging sector.
