Givaudan invests in Microcaps AG to fuel fragrance innovation

Givaudan has scaled encapsulation capacity to serve key markets.

SWITZERLAND – Givaudan has announced an equity investment and strategic collaboration with Microcaps AG, a Swiss firm, to substantially strengthen its encapsulation capabilities and solidify its leadership in fragrance innovation and customer-centric solutions.

The collaboration brings together Givaudan’s extensive expertise in fragrance formulation with Microcaps’ patented precision microencapsulation technology, particularly targeting improved performance in non-alcoholic fine fragrances, with both companies aiming to develop high-performing fragrance and beauty applications.

The encapsulation technology is central to elevating fragrance performance, enabling longer-lasting scents and enhancing consumer enjoyment across fine fragrance, beauty, and personal care product categories.

Jeremy Compton, Givaudan’s global head of Science & Technology Fragrances, stated, “Encapsulation is one of the most transformative technologies in our field.”

“By combining Givaudan’s deep expertise in fragrance creation and innovation, and our commitment to collaborate with Microcaps’ breakthrough technologies, we can explore new ways to enhance performance and sustainability for consumers across many fragrance and skincare applications.”

Microcaps originated from ETH Zurich’s Complex Materials Group and is built on disruptive microfluidic technology that provides encapsulation solutions for the cosmetics, nutraceutical, and health and life sciences sectors.

The privately held technology firm aims to transform traditional market standards by establishing what it describes as the world’s first industrial microfluidic platform.

It has recently launched PerfumePearls, a patented solution for delivering alcohol-free fragrances, with the collaboration specifically targeting longer-lasting scent performance across beauty and personal care products.

Givaudan has been actively expanding its capabilities in encapsulation science, as illustrated by its recent focus on innovations such as VectorHyal, an engineered hyaluronic acid system designed to optimize the potential of active ingredients by combining encapsulation science with hyaluronic acid engineering to improve efficacy and stability in cosmetic applications.

Mathias Fleury, Givaudan’s head of category for active ingredients, explained that the system addresses the core goals of encapsulation by enhancing the stability of active ingredients over time and against factors such as oxidation and light, while also improving performance by boosting skin penetration.

In addition, Givaudan recently expanded its PlanetCap biodegradable fragrance encapsulation range with the launch of Irresistible Laundry Serum, the first integrated solution created for PlanetCap fragrance capsules, which functions as a scent booster to provide fabrics with long-lasting freshness and enhanced sensory performance.
