The US launch adds to BASF’s existing range of sun care and personal care ingredients.

USA – BASF has expanded its sun care portfolio in the United States with the launch of Bemotrizinol, marketed under the brand name Tinosorb® S.
The move follows approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), allowing BASF to market and sell the UV filter in the US.
The authorization applies to sunscreen products manufactured in the country and those imported into the US.
BASF will commercialize Bemotrizinol under a supplemental licensing agreement with DSM Nutritional Products LLC, which grants BASF co-exclusive rights to market and sell the ingredient during the FDA’s 18-month exclusivity period.
Tinosorb® S is a broad-spectrum UV filter formulated to protect the skin against both UVA and UVB radiation.
BASF describes Bemotrizinol as a highly effective and photostable ingredient that maintains its protective performance when exposed to sunlight.
The ingredient can also improve the stability of other UV filters used in sunscreen formulations, giving manufacturers additional flexibility when developing products designed to provide consistent broad-spectrum protection.
The company supplies UV filters under its Tinosorb, Uvinul® and Z-COTE® brands, as well as ingredients intended to improve the performance, texture and stability of finished sunscreen products.
Its portfolio includes emollients, emulsifiers, rheology modifiers, film formers and active ingredients for targeted personal care applications.
Through this broader formulation offering, BASF supports sunscreen manufacturers, brand owners and formulators in developing products that combine effective UV protection with desirable sensory properties and sustainability-focused innovation.
The company also plans to work with US manufacturers and formulation partners to develop new sun care products following the approval of Bemotrizinol for use as a sunscreen active ingredient in the country.
The launch comes as formulators seek sunscreen ingredients that offer broad-spectrum efficacy, photostability and formulation versatility.
By adding Tinosorb® S to its US portfolio, BASF aims to help manufacturers respond to consumer demand for high-performing and durable sun protection products.
Tinosorb® S is supplied through BASF’s Care Chemicals division, which serves the personal care, home care, industrial and institutional cleaning, and technical applications markets.
The division offers ingredients for the cosmetics, detergents and cleaning industries, including surfactants, emulsifiers, polymers, emollients, chelating agents, cosmetic active ingredients and UV filters.
Meanwhile, Tinosorb®, Uvinul® and Z-COTE® are registered trademarks of BASF SE.
