Mondi and Dreco redefine circularity in home care with 50% recycled content packaging

GERMANY – Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging, and Dreco, a German home care brand, have launched a new flexible powder‑detergent packaging solution that integrates 50% post‑consumer recycled (PCR) content while maintaining strong moisture protection.

The introduction reflects a growing push by home‑care brands to reconcile circularity targets with technical performance requirements. 

The product, positioned as part of Mondi’s broader “re/loop” portfolio, is a co‑engineered “re/loop PillowBag” designed for moisture‑sensitive home‑care powders and marketed as a recyclable, mono‑material solution that can help meet incoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) obligations.

Mondi describes the structure as engineered to preserve the integrity of moisture‑sensitive formulations without sacrificing shelf‑life or product quality, which is a key hurdle for brands reluctant to cut back on virgin‑plastic performance.

With the 50% PCR content level, the solution is framed by Mondi as directly aligned with upcoming PPWR targets that will require higher recycled content and improved recyclability across packaging formats.

Because the PillowBag is a mono‑PE structure, it can more readily circulate within existing plastic‑recycling streams, supporting brands’ circular‑economy commitments in the home and personal care (HPC) segment.

“Together with Dreco, we have developed a high-PCR packaging solution for a moisture-sensitive application that is designed for recycling, helping our customer move ahead of regulation while meeting today’s market expectations.”

Dreco is the co‑developer of the pouch, bringing formulation and filling‑line expertise to ensure the structure performs reliably on standard detergent‑packaging equipment. 

The solution has already been rolled out across retail channels in Germany, where it is used by detergent brands seeking to meet local and EU‑level sustainability expectations without compromising product protection or the consumer experience.

For the home and personal care industry, the launch signals that high‑PCR, recyclable, flexible pouches can now be engineered for demanding applications such as powder detergents, which are notoriously sensitive to humidity and oxidation. 

It also reinforces Mondi’s strategy of “Eco‑Design” across HPC: using mono‑materials, boosting recycled content, and tailoring barrier performance to specific product needs, while staying within foreseeable regulatory guardrails on packaging waste and recycling.
