Melt&Marble raises USD 8M in Series A to scale designer fat technology

The investment marks a major milestone, moving the company from R&D to commercialization with the capabilities to deliver sustainable, high-performance ingredients.

SWEDEN – Swedish biotech Melt&Marble has raised €7.3 million(USD 7.88 million) in a Series A funding round to scale production and bring its precision-fermented “designer fats” to market for both personal care and food applications.

The financing was led by Swedish deeptech investor Industrifonden, with participation from the European Commission’s European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund, as well as strategic partners Beiersdorf (personal care) and Valio (food), and from Chalmers Ventures and Catalyse Capital.

This latest round, combined with previous grants, brings Melt&Marble’s total funding to over €10 million(USD 10.8 million) in the past year, signalling strong industry and policy validation of its technology platform and commercial strategy.

Thomas Cresswell, CBO of Melt&Marble, stated, “We’re entering a new era where fats and lipids are no longer seen as commodities alone, but also as precision ingredients that can drive performance, improve health, and support sustainability.”

“With the support of our visionary partners, we are now in a position to bring this new generation of ingredients to market, designed with the intention to meet the demands of modern food and personal care.”

The company is transitioning from R&D to commercialization, with its first ingredients set for launch in personal care by 2026, followed by expansion into food markets, including the US.

Production will be scaled through a European manufacturing partner, enabling cost-effective and sustainable, animal-free fats designed for superior functionality and bioactivity.

Melt&Marble’s designer fats are engineered from the molecular level up to meet technical demands, sustainability goals, and rising consumer expectations for high-performance ingredients.

The global market for oils, fats, and lipids is valued at more than USD 100 billion, covering sectors such as personal care, food, and alternatives to animal-based fats.

Strategic collaborations and co-development efforts are already underway with industry partners to accelerate market entry and product launches.

This move comes after Melt&Marble achieved its first successful demo-scale fermentation of designer fats, scaling up the process to over 10,000 litres and maintaining target bioprocess performance with a more than tenfold increase in bioreactor volume.

Melt&Marble’s scientific team successfully maintained comparable strain and bioprocess performance from earlier trials, proving that their precision fermentation process can reliably produce large quantities of tailored fats.
