Nouryon expands coatings portfolio with Alcosperse OTA-100

A key selling point is its ability to reduce or replace traditional glycol‑based coalescing agents, which are major contributors to paint odour and elevated VOC levels.

NETHERLANDS – Nouryon, a global speciality chemicals leader, has launched Alcosperse® OTA‑100, a new low‑VOC polymer additive aimed squarely at helping paint formulators build more sustainable, low-odour architectural paint systems while preserving key performance attributes.

The product is positioned as a practical, drop‑in enabler for paints that align with tightening VOC regulations and rising consumer demand for “greener” indoor coatings.

Alcosperse OTA‑100 is an acrylate copolymer‑based multifunctional additive designed for water‑based wall paints, textured paints, and roof coatings.

It functions as an open‑time extender, extending the time a paint remains workable on the substrate, thereby enhancing ease of application and finish quality.

The additive is formulated to be compatible with a broad range of existing architectural paint systems, allowing manufacturers to integrate it into current processes with minimal reformulation effort.

Joe Ferrara, vice president of Paints & Coatings at Nouryon, stated, “Alcosperse OTA‑100 helps formulators meet the demand for easier-to-use architectural paints while reducing reliance on glycol.”

“ It is a practical way for producers to advance their low- and zero-VOC product lines without sacrificing quality,”

By replacing some or all of these glycols, formulators can lower the overall VOC content and odour profile of their architectural paints without resorting to radical reformulation.

This supports brands targeting “low-odour” or “low/zero‑VOC” claims for interior paints, which are increasingly important in residential and commercial renovation markets.

Customer trials indicate that Alcosperse OTA‑100 maintains durability, scrub resistance, stain resistance, and water resistance in water‑based architectural paints, even when glycol content is reduced.

That combination of performance and sustainability allows manufacturers to move toward “healthier indoors” narratives without compromising on practical performance metrics that specifiers and contractors care about.

The additive is already being rolled out in the Americas and Europe, with Nouryon offering technical support through its global Paints & Coatings application centres to help formulators optimize inclusion levels and balance VOC, odour, and finish quality.

This is a regulatory‑compliant, brand‑supportive tool that aligns with global trends toward low‑VOC, low-odour architectural paints and broader sustainability agendas in the coatings sector.
