dsm-firmenich aims to offer a new standard for formulations that address modern consumer concerns, reflecting the company’s ongoing focus on biotechnology-driven innovation.

SWITZERLAND – dsm-firmenich has launched GLYCARE SK, a nature-inspired skincare ingredient range that replicates Human Milk Oligosaccharide (HMO) to enhance skin resilience and regeneration for sensitive and stressed skin.
The company leverages decades of HMO research from human nutrition, applying precision fermentation to create bioidentical structures found in a mother’s milk without using any human-derived materials.
This biotechnology-driven approach translates the remarkable resilience and strength infants naturally derive from HMOs into topical solutions that help modern skin recover faster from UV radiation, pollution, and repeated exposure to aesthetic procedures.
Mathieu Moulin, senior global marketing manager of Skin Care at dsm-firmenich, stated, “Our expertise in HMO is built on decades of research in human nutrition.”
“With GLYCARE® SK, we are extending this deep scientific knowledge into skincare, translating life-inspired biology into innovative solutions designed to support skin resilience and regeneration.”
The GLYCARE® SK range comprises two complementary ingredients targeting different skin needs.
GLYCARE® SK RENEW is engineered to repair damage by supporting barrier recovery and skin regeneration, demonstrating a 19% reduction in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) compared to placebo in clinical testing on participants with chronic rosacea and sensitive skin.
After eight weeks, this ingredient showed a 38% reduction in visible redness and erythema while restoring skin structure with 7% better elasticity after just four weeks, alongside 67% collagen I stimulation observed in vitro.
The second ingredient, GLYCARE® SK COMFORT, focuses on day-to-day resilience for sensitive skin, achieving a 16% TEWL reduction compared to placebo after eight weeks, a 13% hydration boost after four weeks, and detectable redness improvement that helps mitigate flare-ups.
This development aligns with growing industry interest in milk-derived bioactives for their anti-inflammatory and barrier-supportive properties, including innovations such as Australian biotech company All G’s precision-fermentation lactoferrin LFX, unveiled last year.
Beyond this product launch, dsm-firmenich continues its skin safety commitments by sponsoring the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Destination Healthy Skin program for the fifth consecutive year.
This mobile screening initiative has reached over 116,000 people with free educational materials and provided nearly 34,000 free skin cancer screenings, identifying over 13,700 potential skin cancers and precancers, including 672 suspected melanomas.
The launch comes as the personal care industry enters Melanoma Awareness Month in May, with various organizations promoting daily sun protection through cross-industry initiatives like the #WearSunscreen campaign.
