Inolex launches bio-based sensory enhancer

The ingredient is derived from coconut and is designed to be biodegradable, with ready biodegradability expected based on EpiSuite modelling.

USA – Inolex has launched SustOleo™ Embrace, a multifunctional sensory enhancer for skin care, body care and fragrance applications.

The coconut-derived amino ester is designed to leave skin radiant, hydrated and smooth while extending fragrance longevity for up to 20 hours.

SustOleo™ Embrace changes from a lightweight oil during application to a soft, cushiony finish on the skin.

It provides slip and playtime without feeling heavy or greasy, and leaves an elastomer-like after-feel.

“Following the success of LexFeel® Enhance MB in sun care, SustOleo™ Embrace marks our second product launch this year,” said Miao Wang, vice-president of research and development and commercialisation at Inolex.

She added that the company’s patented amino ester platform creates interactions with skin and fragrance that combine sensory benefits with performance. In a controlled in-vivo study, a serum containing 7.5% SustOleo™ Embrace reduced the appearance of dry skin scaliness by 33% and improved skin smoothness by 30% after a single application.

Separate visual testing with formulations containing 5% of the ingredient found that all participants reported visible improvements in skin smoothness and elasticity.

The ingredient is also designed to support fragrance performance. In a 24-hour odour-potency test, it extended fragrance release on skin for up to 20 hours.

A 48-hour test conducted at 50°C found that d-limonene loss was 0.79% in a formulation containing SustOleo™ Embrace, compared with 11.01% in a control without a film former.

In comparative testing with jojoba oil and 350 cSt dimethicone, SustOleo™ Embrace spread more easily than dimethicone and showed a spreading profile similar to jojoba oil.

It also delivered greater substantivity without noticeable tackiness or unwanted residue.

According to Inolex, this combination of spreadability, cushion and lasting after-feel offers a sensory profile that is uncommon among naturally derived, silicone-free ingredients.

Art Knox, president of Inolex, said the ingredient addresses three consumer priorities: how a product feels, how the skin looks after application and how long its fragrance lasts.

SustOleo™ Embrace is 85% naturally derived, with a Natural Origin Index of 0.85 under ISO 16128.

It is also palm-free, vegan, cruelty-free, Halal-certified and Kosher-compliant.

The ingredient is available for sampling and can be used in silicone-free skin-care, body-care and fragrance formulations, either as a silicone alternative or alongside existing sensory systems.
