SWITZERLAND – OnSkin, a globally recognized cosmetics scanning application, has expanded from cosmetics into household cleaners, introducing a new feature that helps users assess product label safety and ingredient transparency.
The update applies the company’s science-based scoring approach to everyday cleaning products, aiming to make chemical labels easier to understand and compare.
The new household safety tool evaluates ingredients in products such as all-purpose, kitchen, bathroom, floor, furniture, vehicle, laundry, and dishwashing cleaners.
It produces an overall safety score on a 100-point scale, ranging from excellent to bad, based on five risk areas: respiratory irritation, allergic reactions and skin or eye irritation, endocrine disruption and reproductive toxicity, carcinogenicity, and usage restrictions.
Julia Kuprina, OnSkin’s product director, stated, “Compared to cosmetics, household cleaning products are subject to less consistent regulatory disclosure requirements, making them more difficult to interpret.”
“Ingredients on labels may appear under generic group or even functional names, while individual chemical names may be listed irregularly and lack reliable scientific data.”
OnSkin also adds an ingredient transparency indicator. A “good” rating means all ingredients can be evaluated, “partial” means more than 30% of ingredients may have an unknown impact, and “poor” means more than 70% of the formulation cannot be fully assessed.
The company says household cleaners are harder to interpret than cosmetics because disclosure requirements are less consistent and ingredients may appear under generic or functional names.
OnSkin argues that unclear composition itself is a risk signal, especially because these products are used regularly across the home and can lead to repeated exposure.
This positioning fits a wider consumer-safety and ingredient-transparency trend in beauty and personal care, where OnSkin has already been promoting science-based labeling and safer-formulation decisions.
Meanwhile, early this year, OnSkin unveiled its “Safe Choice” certification, a scientifically validated label designed to assure consumers of completely risk-free ingredients in beauty products.
This tool addresses rising consumer demand for trustworthy clean-beauty verification, distinguishing it from broader scanners by focusing on universally low-risk profiles.
The Safe Choice designation highlights cosmetics achieving a 95+ score on OnSkin’s unique 100-point safety metric, derived directly from complete ingredient disclosures provided by brands.
