SWITZERLAND – dsm-firmenich has developed a novel 3D facial skin microbiome mapping technology that marks a major step forward in skincare science and could help shape the next generation of cosmetic innovation.
The company says the work, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in June 2026, introduces a new way to visualize the skin microbiome in unprecedented detail and reflects the strength of its cross-functional collaboration across Beauty & Care R&D, Science & Research, Animal Nutrition & Health, and external partner Bio-Me.
The study, “3D Facial Skin Microbiome Mapping: An Integrated Technology for Continuous Visualization of Absolute Microbial Densities,” addresses a major gap in microbiome research by moving beyond older methods that rely on relative abundance data from only a few sampling points.
It uses absolute quantification of 26 bacterial and fungal species across 24 facial sites, along with AI models and smooth interpolation, to create the first continuous 3D maps of the facial microbiome.
This creates a more complete, high-resolution view of how microbes are distributed across the face.
Scientifically, the platform delivers several important advances. It provides a clearer and more intuitive picture of microbial topography, reveals spatially distinct interactions between bacteria and fungi, and points to possible competitive dynamics between Malassezia restricta and Cutibacterium acnes.
It also suggests more efficient sampling strategies, with machine-learning models showing that as few as nine sites may be enough to capture microbiome variability, and the central forehead emerging as a particularly useful predictive location.
From a business and market perspective, the breakthrough has clear commercial relevance.
